A stunning Unheated Midnight Blue Ceylon Sapphire from Sri Lanka. This stone is much more transparent and much more blue than the photos show. It was an overcast day when I took the photos. This locality is considered the best in the world for Sapphires. This particular gemstone is an antique mined back in the 1920s and in the private collection of a gem dealer as part of his personal collection. Sapphires such as this are now extremely rare and precious. To give you some scope there are less gem Sapphire on the market than Tanzanite which is only found in the merlani hills of Tanzania and no place else. Sapphire is found in multiple locations and although more abundant the really nice gem quality stones like this are that rare. About 300 times more rare than diamonds.
